Fitz Hugh Ludlow may single handedly disprove the myth that all potheads are brain dead. After reading his book, I'm convinced this is the most brilliant attempt to ever commit psychedelic experiences to paper. His mammoth vocabulary and exceptional writing talent make this book second best to only taking on the psychedelic experience yourself.
In case you're wondering why I refer to eating hash as a psychedelic experience, let me explain. In his hay day, Mr. Ludlow was known to ingest the hash equivalent of an ounce of marijuana in one sitting. Because of these large doses, his experiences were more comparable to LSD than marijuana. The book was written in 1857, so Fitz Hugh Ludlow didn't have the same conveniences as Timothy Leary.
The downside of this book is that you could spend all day flipping through a dictionary to uncover the meanings behind Fitz Hugh Ludlow's massive!
vocabulary. Luckily, Dave Gross has created an edition of this book on CD-ROM that deciphers each archaic word quickly and easily. When you reach an old English word, just click on the hyperlink to retrieve the definition. The content of this book is priceless, but now you can purchase Dave Gross's annotated edition of The Annotated Hasheesh Eater on CD-Rom for only $14.95 here. |
